Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Some of my neighbors
have natural gas. Is gas available for my home?
A. In order to give you accurate information, we will need to determine the availability of gas for your neighborhood. We require the following information: your name, complete address (including zip code), the nearest intersecting streets, the appliances you are planning to convert to gas. We will let you know if gas is available.
Q. What contractors can be used?
A. You may purchase your natural gas equipment from the contractor of your choice.
Customers are advised to call a qualified, licensed natural gas contractor.
Q. Where will the gas meter be installed?
A. The gas meter can be installed in one of the following locations: outside on the front of the house, on either side of the house or within approximately five (5) feet from the front of the house. Typically, your HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) contractor will select a location that best suits the gas pipe installation and proximity to the appliances.
Q. Will there be an interruption in my current energy service?
A. Not if you advise
your heating contractor that they are not to remove the existing heating or
water heating equipment until gas service has been installed and the contractor
called Washington Gas to insure that gas is available.
Q. How will the installation affect my yard, landscaping, driveway and roadways?
A. Care is taken at the time of installation to avoid damage to your yard, landscaping, driveway and roadways. Washington Gas and its subcontractors often use underground boring machines to install gas service to homes. In some cases, however, the geological or architectural composition of an area limits the use of this type of equipment, requiring that trenching equipment be used to install piping. In these instances, restorations will be made to the area upon completion of the work.
Q. Will there be a charge for installing gas service?
A. In most cases there's
a charge for installing gas service. The cost for gas service varies,
depending upon the location of the gas main. Please call 703-941-HEAT or
toll-free 888-941-HEAT to request specific information on the availability
and cost for natural gas installation to your home or business.
